Portal From Facebook: A device for video calling

Facebook just launched Portal, a new device that is specifically meant for video calling. This device comes with Smart Camera and smart Sound. It is Private by design and can connect with Messenger. You can share contents and it also displays photos and notifications.

The device comes in two variants which are ‘portal’ and ‘portal plus’. Portal has a screen size of 10.1 inches and costs $199. Portal Plus has a screen size of 15.6 inches and costs $349.

Mark Zuckerberg said Portal uses an AI-powered Smart Camera and Smart Sound technology to focus on whoever’s talking even across a room. It’s hands-free, voice-controlled and has Amazon Alexa built in. You can use it to call anyone on Facebook Messenger so you can connect with friends and family even if they don’t have Portal. It has a nice big screen — there’s a 10″ version and a 15″ version” — so it’s great for feeling like you’re right there with someone.

The device is great for this because you don’t have to hold a phone or tablet and the AI camera just naturally keeps them in the frame no matter where you are in the room.

Privacy is also built deeply into Portal. It comes with a physical cover for the camera and there’s a built in hardware button to turn off the camera and microphone. Facebook don’t listen to, view, or keep the contents of your calls in any way. Your calls are always completely private.

It will begin shipping next month in time for the holidays, and it’s available now for pre-order at: http://portal.facebook.com
