The MSI WS63VR 7RL is a graphics beast in a slim body. But its display could be brighter, and its touchpad is quite stiff. At a glance, the WS63VR looks like any other workstation. It’s made of black aluminum, with MSI’s logo in silver and its Workstation shield icon on the lid. It’s a slim rectangle that cuts a sleek profile while it’s closed. At 4.1 pounds and 15 x 9.8 x 0.7 inches, the WS63VR’s implementation of Nvidia’s Max-Q design doesn’t make it smaller than other premium workstations. MSI jammed in every port possible along the sides of the WS63VR. On its left side are a Kensington lock slot, an Ethernet jack, an SD card slot, three USB 3.0 ports, and headphone and microphone jacks. On the right are a USB 2.0 port, a Thunderbolt 3 port, an HDMI port, a mini DisplayPort and the power jack. The MSI WS63VR is a powerful workstation in a body that’s smaller than you would expect. It can handle any productivity task you throw at it, and it’s even ready for some gaming and virtual reality on the side. Unfortunately, although it’s sharp, the 15.6-inch, 4K display simply isn’t as bright and colorful as competitors’ screens, and its stiff touchpad may make you consider grabbing an external mouse.
The 15.6-inch, 4K display on the MSI WS63VR is nice and sharp. Producing 99 percent of the sRGB color gamut, and also 247 nits of display.
The keys of the device has 2.1 millimeters of travel, and with the 4.2 x 2.8-inch touchpad.
With the WS63VR’s 2.8-GHz Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU; whopping 32GB of RAM; 2TB, 5,400-rpm hard-disk drive; and 512GB NVMe PCIe solid-state drive, it’s no surprise that it can handle everyday use with ease. Most mobile workstations have powerful GPUs that boost performance in graphics apps such as AutoCAD and Photoshop, but sometimes you need something with a little more oomph. Designed for 3D modeling, video editing or engineering but good enough for gaming, the MSI WS63VR is up for that task. It packs a brawny Nvidia Pascal-based Quadro GPU into a superslim chassis, thanks to its status as the first workstation with a Max-Q design. Its 4K display might not be as bright as some competitors’ screens, but if you’re looking for raw graphics performance, this is the PC to keep your eye on. The device lasts for 3 hours on full charge.
The WS63VR comes with an Nvidia Quadro P4000 GPU with Max-Q design and 8GB of VRAM that handles most gaming needs. This is the first workstation with a Max-Q GPU, a new design standard from Nvidia that trades off a little performance for a thinner, quieter system.
MSI comes with an inbuilt battery calibration software and MSI True Color for screen customization, including anti-blue light technology for late-night work, Keeper Password Manager, Candy Crush Soda Saga, March of Empires, Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, Twitter and Bubble Witch 3 Saga. MSI sells the WS63VR with a three-year warranty.
